I was having a discussion with an associate of mine the other day about the number of small retailer shops that have closed in our urban area.

I asked him if he thought any retail establishment could survive in a modern Urban American environment without taking “Dirty” Money. For clarity “Dirty” Money is defined as any money acquired: through crime, from a government program, or from private charity.

We both agreed that no urban retailer could survive in that environment. Whatcha think?

To be clear.

Would you lump an SBA (Small Business Administration) loan as money acquired through the government? Even though it is a loan and will need to be paid back?

It all depends upon what one is selling.

I love to garden and shop at local nurseries. The prices are often LESS than online prices, and the quality far greater. The prices for online plants include handling and shipping, which is time consuming compared to me just bringing a plant up to the counter, and I enjoy the experience of shopping in person, so I continue to go.

Retail can only survive if they provide a service better than online now. In rural areas, you only see Dollar Stores and Walmarts.

No.

I was more talking about what they take at the register. I know a small convenience store owner who claims probably 80% of the funds that come across the counter in his store meet that “Dirty Money” criteria. Electronic and cash

Well, living in suburbs, I am surrounded by retail establishments with new strip malls being filled up, so I guess they can.

I don’t get it. You are equating charity with crime?

Hell, a lot of forums ask for donations.
