In our newspaper local original or updated crime stories generally appear on pages 3 & 4 and most of them include pictures - mug shots - of the accused/indicted/convicted/whatever perps, the overwhelming majority of which are blacks, almost exclusively young males. Yet blacks represent only 20% of the area's population. The next most frequently appearing group, but dwarfed by comparison, are young Hispanic males. So if you're not black or Hispanic but a criminal who's the subject of one such story, you just get lumped into the "Other" category of whites, Asians, or whatever.
And because there are so few Others the subjects of stories and pics, every once in a while some black community preacher or some other pooh-bah complains about the slanted racial bias in the paper's reporting and blah, blah, blah. All of which the paper routinely refutes via local crime statistics and promises to cover, as always, the same types of violent crimes when they are committed by Others. Which is their polite way of saying there is, once again, no basis to these latest allegations.
Then it's quiet until the next time, but at least all the huffing and puffing of the one making the accusation built a little street cred with his fellow low information voters, which is probably the objective all along IMO.
