Converting Youtube to MP3s - ?

There are lots of conversion programs allowing you to convert youtube songs to mp3s then download them onto your computer, all free. How is this legal?

See, that's my thought also. If it's not legal how is it that FireFox has over a dozen converter programs that you can add-on and use to convert youtubes to mp3s? Why haven't TPTB (and I don't exactly know who they are) swooped in and yanked these programs?
