I went through 12 years of such memorization. I was pretty good at it, but others were much better. Sadly, with so many distractions I don't think most kids can even memorize stuff.

It was a highly rated college prep school. Ironically few grads went on to college as most came from working class families and weren't oriented to higher education. However, most did very well in their chosen fields.
