College Football

I saw Lindy's pre-season rankings. Georgia is #1, followed by OSU, TX, and OR. I can't remember the number five team, but defending champ MI is six.

The 8 team playoff should be really fun to watch this year.

Some big early games, including Clemson at GA, ND at TX A&M, and OR-OSU (a few weeks in). I haven't looked to see if Alabama has replaced Saban, but I assume they have someone by now.

I've like college over pro lately. Saturday is my football day. Sunday is rest and other activity.
It's not an 8 team playoff, it's 12.

Which by the way really ticked me off. 6 would be acceptable, 8 would allow the occasional undefeated mid-major to get in. But 12?

With 12, you get 3 loss big-name teams getting in who have no business being considered. When too many teams make the playoffs, it F's over the regular season games.

I would say that if you go back throughout history, I could probably identify 6 or less teams who were truly deserving of being considered for a shot at the championship.. perhaps an occasional year with 1-2 more (like last year).

You know they'll put in one team from a non power conference and claim that's giving them a fair chance. While the third, fourth and fifth place teams in major conferences will get considered for spots. The havoc will start if you get multiple undefeated non power conference teams. With wins over some of those big name teams.

It needed to be 6, at most 8. 12 sucks balls, ruins the legimitacy

8 would ensure no byes. 12 was just a money grab.
The Big 10 is going to be insane this year.

You already had major programs like OSU, Michigan, and Penn St.
You had significant programs recently like Iowa, Wisconsin, and Purdue
And now you add Oregon, USC, and Washington

If you take last year's rankings.. here's Michigan's schedule:
Fresno St
#3 Texas
AR St
USC
Minnesota
#2 Washington
Illinois
Michigan St
#6 Oregon
Indiana
Northwestern
#10 Ohio St.

Every year is different, but you can bet that Texas, USC, Washington, Oregon, and Ohio state will have top 25 caliber teams.

Most years in the Big 10 you'd face 2, or 3 max.

Thanks. I missed that for some reason.

I guess some of this is part of one's philosophy. There are teams that are overwhelmingly good in the regular season, and then get ousted in the first round of the playoffs. Bal, Atl, and LA were all 100+ win teams last year, but none of them made the World Series. If you have too many teams, it's almost as if you have a reg season champ and a post season champ.

In baseball, I prefer 32 teams, with 8 divisions of 4 teams. You simply have division winners in the playoffs.

I'm not a big fan of 1st byes, but not totally against it. The NCAA probably lucked out in not having three really great undefeated teams when there was a 2 team playoff. On the other hand, reality trumps the what if factor. Still, Central FL got screwed that one year.

They could even hold back on announcing the number of teams until the season is over. I know that's a somewhat crude throwback, but it's worth a try. Even just to mix it up and make it interesting.

I heard the Knights got recognized as #1, but not sure if that was token or honorary.

SEC ruled the roost for awhile because of speed, while conferences like the Big 10 focused on power (generally). But that has evened out. Only thing I would like to see is SEC visiting more cold weather sites.

Best dog mascot in college football. Sorry, Uga. ☹️

CAL,, Stanford to the ACC? Huh?

USC, UCLA, ORE, WASH to fly to Rutgers, to PA in the Big 10? when will they do classwork? Lol!

I would not want those flights to-from six-10 times per year. Risk (DEI maintenance)., jet lag, small seats, weather, luggage, six hours in the air. UGH. Bad enough SEA to LA.

It was designed as a game with your States local kids playing together vs. nearby States. Then an unknown far away at a Championship bowl game. Now? Its paid mercenaries from all over the Globe, ruling the roost. Grades or attendance is no longer any issue.

There are over 130 teams in the "league". Less than 10% making the playoffs is too many? If as you say there will be teams who are "undeserving" then they will lose and no harm no foul. Essentially what we will get is more games between good teams. I'm not sure how the fan loses in this situation. Damn near half the teams in the NFL make the PO's and there are certainly years when the "best team" doesnt win. The 49er's are arguably the best team on paper and have been for a number of years. But the PO's are good, everyone watches, stadiums are packed, ratings are through the roof..... Are there some dud games? Sure but there were dud games with it was just a 2 teams PO in college football.

What year do you think it is? These schools have been recruiting nationwide for decades.

Let me stop you right there… you can’t call it a 130 team league.. you can’t count Ball St and Hawaii the same as Penn St and LSU.

Also, any team only plays 1/13th of all “league” teams. It’s not comparable to a professional league whatsoever

What is clear is that I could go back 15 years and identify a clear Top tier of teams who deserve to have an opportunity to play for the championship. That tier involves anywhere between 3-6 teams, and it’s usually crystal clear.

Don’t play dumb here

Does Ball St get to compete for some other national championship Im unaware of? Im all for breaking up the Div 1 FBS into more "leagues" but the fact of the matter is currently they are all in one. 3/4 of the "league" being unable to compete with the other 1/4 doesnt change that.

Who cares? Why play the games then? Seriously if we can just look at the teams know who's the best what's the point of playing? If Div 1 can't field 12 competitive teams that's a sad state of affairs.

It will end up 1 loss mid majors being left out for Big conference 1-3 loss teams getting in. Nothing will change. Undefeated UCF or SEMO or SD state will get left out as 3-loss TENN or Iowa, ND gets put in. Not because they are truly that much better, but they travel well, draw TV.

Ok. Do I get to watch a more compelling game than Alabama playing East Tennessee School for the Blind? Because that's the game that gets eliminated.
