The point is that the Assad regime was the best compromise possible, given that the majority Sunni would otherwise kill off the minority Shiite, if a Shiite like Assad were not on power.
You always want the minority in power because they are always forced to then compromise.

Without Assad, now ISIS, Turkey, and Israel are going to take control of different part of Syria.
It was much better off with Assad.
