The ONLY reason Germany and other EU nations are "stepping up" is because America has been nearly depleted of resources after decades of handouts to unappreciative EU countries and American taxpayers are beginning to see how abusive and lopsided the relationship has been.
The EU stabs America on the back every chance it gets. They buy TONS of Russian oil, natural gas and other Russian goods rather than getting it from the USA, all the while receiving billions in support from American taxpayers.

Actually , even in the unrealistically optimistic scenario America will lose more than 20 mln Americans killed. In a phone call with Putin, Trump urged for an immediate ceasefire, but he was unable to get Putin's approval. Trump did his best but Putin doesn't want end the war soon until initial objectives are met, such as securing eastern Ukraine and removing Zelensky from power.
According to the WSJ, he had explained to European leaders that Putin was not in favor of an early end to the war because of the unfavorable situation in Ukraine.
However, after his phone call with Putin, he changed his stance on sanctioning Russia and became reluctant to strengthen sanctions, saying that "it could make the situation worse."
