First was that into the war Confederate troops didn't have shoes, were poorly armed, clothes were tatters. Thanks to the many photos of dead soldiers we know this a myth. They were well dressed, had shoes, and were well armed. But the one thing missing in the photos - food.

The second was the tactics. We all know about the mass casualties from the frontal attacks derived from the Napoleon era. But the last half of the war was mostly trench warfare. Sometimes 10 yards from each other. Europe laughed at our militaries and the mass casualties thinking we were just stupid. But 50 years later even greater slaughter was occuring in Europe.
