idealists are convinced that growing tensions can be defused between the US & China, by keeping the focus on what we supposedly have in common (combating climate change, containing North Korea, our massive, if one-sided, trading relationship and mutual investments)

if only America does not allow itself to fall prey to irrational fears over China's rise, conflict can be permanently avoided. far better to allow china to carve out its own sphere of influence as Asia's regional hegemon than attempt to contain it through a growing network of alliances.
