1. When a pal asked what would be solid evidence for evolution, I said, if I were making the argument, Id be sure to include the fact that the chimp and the human have 99% identical DNA.
a. So, he sez But how can you explain your "similar DNA" argument ?
b. A great question, I sez. Great answer coming right up!
2. The polymath, Rene Descartes, early on pointed out the problem of a literal 6-day creation narrative, rather than geological evidence. He also continues to see the hand of God in the creation. In chapter six of Le Monde, he states that at the first instant of creation, God provides the parts with different properties, and after that He does not intervene supernaturally to regulate same. http://assets.cambridge.org/97805218/08972/sample/9780521808972ws.pdf
a. Every organism is equipped with genetic information called DNA.
b. The mutation mechanism explains variation over time. Once God provides said mechanism He does not intervene supernaturally to regulate same.
3. As for the 99% similarity between chimp and man .so what? Pretty much all plant and animals share a 100% similarity in having the same basic nucleic acids .DNA and RNA. This speaks to #2 above God provides the parts
a. DNA forms chromosomes prior to reproduction .Humans have 23 pair .Chimps have 24 pair ..See some sort of proof of evolution there? List of organisms by chromosome count - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
4. Now .one might suggest that the 99% gene similarity proves that Darwinian evolution .but:
In Science, 1975, M-C King and A.C. Wilson published an exhaustive paper estimating the degree of similarity between the human and the chimpanzee genome. This documented the degree of similarity between the two! Hence, we must be one with apes! But in the second part of their thesis King and Wilson describe honestly the deficiencies of such an idea:
The molecular similarity between chimpanzees and humans is extraordinary because they differ far more than sibling species in anatomy and way of
life. Although humans and chimpanzees are rather similar in the structure of
the thorax and arms, they differ substantially not only in brain size but also in the anatomy of the pelvis, foot, and jaws, as well as in relative lengths of limbs and digits (38).
Humans and chimpanzees also differ significantly in many other anatomical respects, to the extent that nearly every bone in the body of a chimpanzee is readily distinguishable in shape or size from its human counterpart (38).
Associated with these anatomical differences there are, of course, major differences in posture (see cover picture), mode of locomotion, methods of procuring food, and means of communication. Because of these major differences in anatomy and way of life, biologists place the two species not just in separate genera but in separate families (39) . So it appears that molecular and organismal methods of evaluating the chimpanzee human difference yield quite different conclusions (40).

So .the 99% similarity of genome ..no biggie.
