Rangel, one of the longest-serving members of Congress, died on Memorial Day at age 94, according to a statement from the City College of New York, where he served after leaving politics. CCNY didn’t state a cause of death.
Known for his genial manner, the gravelly voiced lawmaker was an unmistakable presence on Capitol Hill when he served as Upper Manhattan’s Democratic representative from 1971 to 2017, and he was part of a powerful political circle of Black leaders in New York.
In the 2000s, Rangel became an outspoken critic of President George W. Bush and the Iraq war. He became the first Black chairman of the influential House Ways and Means Committee, which presides over taxes and many social and health programs.
Ethics problems pushed him out in 2018. He'd served forever.
I didn't like him, but I respect anyone who shows up.
R.I.P.
