Here's a theory:

As long as Trump is in the race, he makes Jeb look like a weenie. Carson could replace Trump as the front runner and then eclipse the other candidates, leaving Bush as the experienced alternative. If Bush got the nomination, he could pick Carson as VP to heal the rift.
