I didn't see anything in the article about book burning.

I read Shakespeare, Chaucer, DH Lawrence, Laurence Durrell, Sartre, Chekov, Ibsen, Thomas Mann, E. M. Forster’ and many other books in HS.

There's plenty of time to teach both. YES there were bigoted characters in Shakespeare's works, just as there still are. He portrayed people as they were and are. The major themes in his plays are as pertinent today as they were then.

Of course students will enjoy Cisneros; that's good reading, too.

It's not the end of the world if a student knows nothing about Shakespeare, but it would be sad if he were removed from the canon entirely.

Book burning isn't just a matter of physically lighter pages ablaze, if refers to the suppression of works by the Reich or the state - in this case the government socialized schools.
