Funny thing. Between 1920 and 1950, the population of the USSR increased by 40 million people despite losing 20 million in WWII. Yet Stalin supposedly killed all these "millions" (if you blame civil wars and famines on him to get those numbers).

Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn went to the gulag because Stalin made it a practice to send soldiers who fought for the Soviet Union in WW2 to the camps because he feared having a group of trained soldiers loose in society. Basically, his crime was defending his country and surviving.
