Republican gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton and state controller candidate Herb Morgan released a report claiming fraud, waste, and abuse across California government programs could total $250 billion over the past five years.

They called it the Califraudia report, built from hundreds of whistleblower tips submitted to their website. The estimate dwarfs anything previously reported in any state, and it landed just as President Trump announced a federal investigation into California.

Whether the number holds up to scrutiny is another question entirely.

Would anyone be surprised if California fraud exceeds that $250 billion number? There was a massive loss by the unemployment office, the "high speed" rail, money lost for the homeless, and no doubt many more.

$250 Billion Fraud Allegations Rock California in Explosive New Report

Well, let's say just for argument's sake that there is massive fraud, waste and abuse in California (which wouldn't be surprising), especially as much of the funds that were supposed to go to funding the high-speed rail, but somehow can't be accounted for.
Would it not be important for the tax money the state and local governments take from you be spent wisely for necessities of actually running the basics of a government and providing for its citizens, rather than being siphoned off by those politicians and their cronies for their own personal use (note: I'm not counting their basic legitimate salaries)?

Unfortunately, there's tons of waste, fraud, and abuse in most states of the union and definitely at the federal level as well.

"Power corrupts. Absolutely power corrupts absolutely."

The Pentagon has failed several audits and has lost more than $800 Billion. Pentagon fails 7th audit, can't fully account for $824 billion

Minnesota, California, Illinois, and likely every state are in debt and are poor stewards of tax dollars.

California is in trouble but so is the entire nation.

Liberals should be furious at this. That $250 could have gone to all their pet projects. Instead the money is just gone.

So far we haven't heard anything on where monies could have gone. It's just starting to get interesting.

Talk about not being held accountable.

As you said, power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. That is a perfect reason for never allowing something like Communism, or an Oligarchy, or a Theocracy to take over.

Their "pet projects" are just cover for the fraud - which is the purpose and expected "benefit" of being tied into the Democrat Party crime machine.

Been going on for decades.

I'm pretty sure California's fraud far exceeds that $250 billion number. They have consistently received more federal funds than any other state.

If it were possible, I'd move someplace where there is zero government. I wish there was a place we could call "the land of the free and the home of the brave" but I've yet to find such a place.

Im sure the search for a fall guy is already in full swing.

I've found there is no such place. Even out here surrounded by trees, we're still subject to township and county ordinances like having to pay $300 to have the septic tank pumped every few years, insurance company whims that force you to replace your roof and have trees cut away from the house, people who put game cameras and deer stands on your property, and the Department of Natural Resources designating a small creek running through your land as a "navigable waterway." Then there's the damned property tax bill we get every year, which the mortgage escrow never seems to completely cover.

California's total public debt, including state and local governments, is substantial, with recent estimates ranging from over $1 trillion to as high as $1.6 trillion or more

It won't matter, they'll still be voting for Dims all the way.

After living in California for decades and seeing what happens, it works like this. Very clever and hopeful accounting leaves a projected surplus of millions of dollars. This is a PROJECTED surplus. It doesn't exist. But the state spends it anyway. That leads to massive shortfalls and the state starts grabbing money from anywhere it can. It drains actual programs. Now there's no money.

In a sense, we're all "subjects to the crown" (the various, collective governments being "the crown"). We're all forced to pay tribute or your stuff will be taken from you. So we really own nothing. Don't pay property taxes? Knock, knock. Don't pay for permission to drive your car via driver's license renewals and car insurance? You're hobbled and no longer "free" to drive. And how many people have had their property stolen thanks to "imminent domain" laws? Nope ... we're all subjects ... not free men.
