In WWII, 20 year old George HW Bush was shot down bombing the island of Chichijima. Along with eight other pilots, Bush parachuted out in the waters off the island. The other eight pilots were captured by the Japanese. Bush managed to be rescued by a submarine

In September 1944, nine American pilots escaped from their planes after being shot down during bombing raids on Chichijima, the largest island in the Japanese archipelago of the Bonins. Eight of the airmen, Lloyd Woellhof, Grady York, James "Jimmy" Dye, Glenn Frazier Jr., Marvell "Marve" Mershon, Floyd Hall, Warren Earl Vaughn, and Warren Hindenlang were captured and eventually murdered. The ninth, and only one to evade capture, was future U.S. President George H. W. Bush, then a 20-year-old pilot.

After the war, it was discovered that the captured airmen had been beaten and tortured before being executed. The airmen were beheaded on the orders of Lt Gen. Yoshio Tachibana.

Japanese officers then ate parts of the bodies of four of the men

Yes i read some time ago about the Japs eating body parts as some sort of macabre ritual nothing to do with hunger, those bastards were savages, boyhood friend of my Dads was a POW of the Japs but survived Dad said he was a tall healthy lad who he played football with before the war came home a half starved wreck.

Evidently, Bush saved his life by refusing to ditch his plane until he was as far away from the island as possible. Unfortunately his Navigator died by jumping out at too low an altitude.
Bush could see the Japanese capturing the other flyers and did not learn their fate until he was President

This is true. My own GF was a prisoner of the Japanese. They were evil to the core, as is evidenced by this horror story:

Far worse than being a POW of the Germans, i have known more than one who was a prisoner of the Japs, when i was at School my best mate had a Uncle who ran a motorcycle shop near our School and we would go visit at lunch times, he had also been a POW of the Japs, i was told after the war he was arrested in Blackpool for attacking a Chinese man, probably a flashback when he saw the Chinaman thinking he was Japanese, clear he had been affected by his time as a prisoner working on the Burma railway where you could be killed on the spot just for not bowing to a guard or just looking at one of them the wrong way, think about what that did mentally on a daily basis.

This is the story that Joe Biden, in his haze of dementia and drugs, attributed to his own uncle instead of President Bush.
