2000 is an eztimate. they dont actually know what they have.

One of the imperialist argumentss made for keeping stolen treasure is that London is the safest place for these items.

That rings hollow today as the scale of the pilfering becomes clear. The items were not even on display. they were stored "safely" in the warehouse and were nicked by staff.

Perhaps now is the time to hand back the stolen loot and STFU ?

So much for finders keepers?

It's happening in the U.S., not so much the theft part (because criminals here are too stupid to know anything about all these artifacts) but the calls from other countries to return these artifacts to where they originated. There are museums that have many collections donated to them by now dead people who basically looted them out of their home countries.

"Collections" is an elastic word isnt it ?

Many will have been stolen to start with from our Colonial days.

"Safe" takes on a whole new meaning when you distinguish between visitors/consumers versus the staff. The majority of theft in retail is done by employees.
