I’m sure that had a lot to do with visual confusion. This should have been clearly conveyed by the tower.First mistake: ATC supervisor let one of his employees leave early, making the tower short-handed.
Second mistake: She was flying a training mission, and should have known the correct altitude. She was not flying it.
Third mistake: The ATC asked "Do you see the airplane?" instead of "Do you see the airplane at your 10 o'clock?" She mistook the airplane ahead of American Airlines as the one ATC was referencing. Bad communication by ATC, deadly.
Final mistake: Neither she nor her trainer in the right seat noticed American Airlines jet, lights blazing, on final approach in standard flight pattern. All other mistakes aside, had either of the Blackhawk pilots been properly alert, no disaster.

Regardless, the helicopter was in violation of altitude restrictions and appeared to be headed back in the direction of nearby Ft. Belvoir where it took off from.
