There are two kinds of Trump supports. The first are those who didn't study history (and lack critical thinking skills) so are unknowingly repeating it. The other, like Newt Gingrich, a history professor, who does know history, but desires to repeat it. Either way, this is where we are and this film will show you just how bad it could be. The Germans learned their lesson about the consequences of embracing authoritarianism last century, now it will be our term. This was so needless...

In a tense family meeting, Bonhoeffer and his loved ones unravel the chilling truth behind Hitler's meteoric rise, confronting the catastrophic corruption of the church.

I just got home from watching Bonhoeffer at the theater. I had tried to get tickets when it first came out, but every showing for the week was sold out. (That may not be too exciting because I think it was only showing on one screen with a small seating selection). At 75, I think I was about the same age as everyone else in the theater.

While the movie has odd pacing it is overall a very worthwhile way to spend a couple hours, as this B'hoeffer fellow was a hero of the 20th century who did not get the attention that he deserved. I thought I understood Hitler's rise in Germany from my readings, etc., but this film shows the disgraceful tale of the German Church's complicity with Hitler, even as his agenda was elucidated over the decade of the 1930's. If it is true to life, many church-going Germans felt the evil of the Nazi's taking over of the Church, and were very disappointed with their pastors, etc.

Many years ago, I was working for a German company (Siemens), and got into a discussion with one of the Germans about how conspicuously today's Germans do NOT attend Church and want nothing to do with it. My counterpart said that it was all disillusionment with how badly the German Church had acted during WWII. The people just got disgusted with them and wrote them off.

The OP is totally off base. The MAGA movement, while personality based, is nothing like what happened in Germany, or indeed in many other countries over the past 120 years. He is a political rock star, not a "God."

Nice analysis. However, Trump and MAGA are far more dangerous, imo, than you suggest.
