Federal agencies will be closed on Thursday, Jan. 9, in honor of the passing of President Jimmy Carter, who died on Dec. 29 at the age of 100.

President Joe Biden signed an executive order on Monday to officially announce a National Day of Mourning and a one-day closure of federal agencies and departments. The executive order tells agency heads to prepare for the upcoming closure.

“All executive departments and agencies of the federal government shall be closed on January 9, 2025, as a mark of respect for James Earl Carter, Jr., the thirty-ninth President of the United States,” Biden wrote in the executive order.

Well there goes nearly a billion for nothing.
$818 million.

The estimated taxpayer cost for each federal holiday is $818 million1. This includes base pay for federal workers and premium pay for necessary workers

Trump did the same thing for H. W. Bush so I'm not casting stones at Biden but these "traditional" fed days off need to end.

A "moment of silence" would do the same thing.

One day is not enough.

The nation should mourn for at least one year.

Close Fed for a calendar year.

NO FED.

How can any member of the Federal government be expected to work for the next year when Jimmy Carter died after 2 years in hospice?

I used to work for the Federal Government and people were amazed I got days off like MLK, Columbus Day and Veterans Day

What I didn’t get were the day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, New Years Eve, Good Friday

Folks in the private sector don’t always get those days off either.

I’ve never had a Good Friday off in my life.

Poor JC….2 years in hospice to reach 100 and die.

Why does God hate JC?

Did you get Christmas Eve off or the day after Thanksgiving?
Federal Employees don’t

Jimmy had a long life

Survived terminal brain cancer
Survived the death of his wife
Two years in hospice

Tough dude

God did not want any part of JC. Why make JC suffer for so long?

Close the Fed for 12 months at least to mourn.

Why should you get Good Friday if atheists, Muslims, and Jews don't get their holidays? You don't believe anyway.

Many in the private sector get Good Friday off

I was pointing out that the Government does not get many more holidays than the private sector

Never seen it.

I propose doing away with MLK Jr.'s birthday, President's Day, Juneteenth, Columbus Day, and renaming Labor Day to Patriot's Day and moving it to a fixed date of 9/11. We could also move Thanksgiving to Friday vice Thursday. Non-Christians would be able to choose another holiday instead of Christmas as PTO. Other holidays would remain.

How does that sound?

It all depends on the school district. We always get MLK Day, sometimes President's Day, Always Labor Day, sometimes Columbus day, almost never on Veteran's Day, and we take Wednesday - Thursday - Friday for Thanksgiving. Christmas varies from 10-14 days depending on the calendar for Christmas/New Years.

Most districts only pay for the days off if they are a federal holiday also. We don't get paid for breaks except the actual holiday. No pay for Spring, fall, or Holiday breaks at all.

KY is bizarre in that schools are usually out for the Friday before the Kentucky Derby so teachers can attend the Oaks race at Churchill Downs. It's weird, but a tradition, nonetheless. The Oaks is like the Derby for fillies and most teachers are women, so I guess it goes together.
