My favorite movie villain is still Hamlet, best portrayed by Mel Gibson.

Hamlets greif for his fathers death caused him to see halucinations of his fathers ghost and this led to his undermining then killing his uncle, indirectly caused the death of his own mother and several friends.

A misguided son who destroyed a kingdom from greif and despair breaking his grip on reality.
