Beaver releases into wild to be allowed in England for first time in centuries

Uurgh. Its basically a big rat. You should stick to squirrel.

Oh they're a lot bigger than a big rat. From 2 and a half to four feet long not counting the tail and they're heavy. I had to move a dead one. They also can kill people though it may have only happened once. How can you tell I'm Canadian

And why local people don't hunt them?

It's the southern tip of South America and there aren't that many people there. The problem is that there are no natural predators. If you get to close to a beaver it's gone underwater and into it's lodge. Untouchable though I think wolverines can tear one apart.

If there aren't that many people - you can also introduce bears, they are much more valuable prey for human hunters.

From the article

"In 1946, the Argentinian government imported 20 beavers from Canada, which were to be released in Cami Lake with the intention of creating a commercial fur trading industry.

One observer noted that anyone considering importing beavers should also import bears, those being the beavers' natural predators

According to a June 2011 NPR report, 200,000 beavers were living in the area. Another report put the number in excess of 100,000, and stated the level of destruction as akin to having bulldozers thrashing through the area."

Introducing bears would have been like the snakes in Florida that eat everything. The bears most likely would have hunted animals that are easier to catch.
