B&Q is set to cut more than 650 jobs as it seeks to "streamline" its retail operations. The home improvement retailer is looking to slash deputy manager, trading manager and team leader roles across its 318 outlets and headquarters, according to Retail Week.

-----------------

Simply put, give businesses millions of extra costs in National Insurance tax, redundancies follow. Apparently to Labour, this is called 'Growing the economy '. The economy has stalled and the poor soles who can't get moved over into a lower paid role, will be on the unemployment heap. Just in time for Xmas. Labour = Clueless.

Sounds like a good opportunity to open a Menard's or Home Depot in the UK.

A solid company does not need those positions.....We proved that at the DuPont plant i worked at.

At start-up (per-shift/4 shifts) we had 1 shift supervisor and five 1st line supervisors. By and by 24 supervisory positions were eliminated.

When I retired we had just the shift supervisor per shift and a plant manager.

The (well paid and non-union) employees ran the departments with the employees handling safety, personnel, and all the monthly inspections.

It did not happen overnight but it sure trimmed labor costs for the plant.

It actually had a clear out a few years ago to make it 'more efficient '. The raise in NI has made many businesses cut staff/hours. Just means in store if you expect to find staff to help you, forget it. And they wonder why shoplifting is rife.

A holiday village in Cumbria had two assistant managers (to cover various centres). When the increase in NI was announced, both had to sit down and agree which one was going to made redundant to cover the wage cost. Again, just another business on bare bone staff, and the staff on burnout.

They are too expensive anyway, i have a local timber Merchant who blows them away on price, same with other DIY supplies.

The timber merchant will be because it's not a comparative business format. Can you get that drill, 4b2 wood, and white emulsion from your timber merchant at 4pm on a Sunday? Totally different overheads.

A PLC will have large pension funds as shareholders to raise funds to pay pensions. How much is the local timber merchants contributing?

Don't over think it, if i want a tin of emulsion i won't turn into a pumpkin if i have to buy it a few hours later.
