At a recent college speech, Governor Kasich was asked by a co-ed what HE WOULD DO to combat the "rape culture" on campus (my words, not hers, but that is essentially what she asked).

Ignoring the fact that it was an utterly stupid question to ask a candidate for president, here are a few points he might have made in response:

(1) The number of "rapes" on campus has been grotesquely exaggerated in various media. If your parents sent you to college knowing that there was a "one in five" chance that you would be raped before graduating, they should be imprisoned for child endangerment. But that number is bullshit and everyone knows it is bullshit.

(2) When considering "rape" in the sense that it is classically used - man lying in wait and assaults an unsuspecting woman, taking her sexually by force or threat of force - you are safer on campus than you are in your neighborhood back home. But nothing is 100% safe.

(3) Much, if not most, of the "social" activity on any campus is primarily intended to facilitate college "men" identifying promiscuous women in order to copulate with them. If the women can be induced to promiscuity by alcohol or controlled substances, that can be arranged. If the woman can be induced to provide sexual favors by exploiting her low self-esteem or a desire to "fit in," that can also be arranged. But never forget the purpose of all of these parties, keggers, and whatever else they may be called.

(4) If a college woman wants to avoid unwanted sexual activity, she needs to conduct herself in a manner that is consistent with her knowledge of #3 above.

Quick quiz:

If a guy you don't know says, "Let's go someplace where we can be alone," what is the appropriate response?

If a guy you don't know hands you a colorful mixed drink and encourages you to consume it immediately, should you do so? Or pop a pill?

If a guy that you would not want to copulate with wants to go someplace private and "neck," is that a good idea?

Is it possible to revoke one's implied consent to sexual activity retroactively?
