excerpt:
CANBERRA (Reuters) - Australia, a staunch U.S. ally, is boosting the number of its troops in Iraq (news - web sites) to better protect Australian diplomats and personnel training the Iraqi military, a minister said on Tuesday.

The move was also a show of support for the U.S.-led coalition in Iraq as some countries start to withdraw troops because of continuing violence and a series of kidnappings and executions of hostages.

a total of 880 will be in Iraq.

This is significant when you consider that most of the Aussie troops are their crack special ops troops.

The PM of Australia is a fan of Bush's and quite supportive.

bravo mr. howard, but if he loses election this fall... well, i hope the troops stay, and even more come. they are great allies of ours
