This Army Times article made my weekend! The article describes the renaming ceremony of Ft. Eisenhower from Ft. Gordon.
I was stationed there, then named Ft. Gordon, from 2001- 2004, including two deployments- one to Afghanistan and one Iraq. The whole time I was stationed there, I, a Yankee from Philadelphia, often bemoaned the fact that America had bases named after defeated traitors who lost a rebellion to secede from the Union to keep slavery. This was when I was introduced to the ridiculous “Lost Cause” fairytale.
Now I have one less thing to complain about. I’m proud to have now served at Ft. Eisenhower, an Army post named after an OG Antifa!

In his Christmas Day Proclamation, Johnson said his action would “renew and fully restore confidence and fraternal feeling among the whole, and their respect for and attachment to the national [e.g., federal] government, designed by its patriotic founders for the general good.”
Under the terms of surrender for the Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox Court House on April 10, 1865, Gen. Ulysses S. Grant stipulated that “each officer and man will be allowed to return to his home, not to be disturbed by United States authority so long as they observe their paroles and the laws in force where they may reside.”
On May 5, 1965, the paroles were further extended so that soldiers from the 11 Confederate states, plus West Virginia, would be allowed to return home, but that “all who claim homes in the District of Columbia and in states that never passed the Ordinance of Secession (Maryland, Kentucky, and Missouri) have forfeited them and can only return thereto by complying with the amnesty proclamation of the president and obtaining special permission from the War Department.”

When Meigs got the approval on June 15, 1864, to establish a cemetery at the Lee estate, he began mapping out the locations for burials. By the end of June, 2,600 bodies had been put in the ground. One year later, the war was over and the number of graves had grown to more than 5,000.
So as it was illegally "confiscated", it was in fact still Lee's up until the Estate sold it to the Gov in 1883/4.
So the cemetery was built on Lee's Land.
Disgraceful!!! Exhume all the graves and rebury them in a Place of Honour!!!!
