I think you confuse 'could not' with 'did not'. It is just more efficient to use smaller stones. We can move massive stones today, up to 20,000 tons, but we chose to build with bricks instead.During the Dark Ages and the Renaissance we could not move Stones of the 40 - 90 Tonne Range
I highly doubt it involved highly reactive metals. They just didn't have the technology to refine sodium or lithium, or anything like that.It is a recipe we don't have. We can guess but that is all we can do.
