It's not that I expect them to disappear entirely, ever. There'll always be a market for these sorts of games. However, thinking about my rather ample experience playing MMOs, most of them aren't terribly social. RuneScape, in essence, is basically just large numbers of players grinding materials, items, etc. in silence. The game could, for all intents and purposes, be single player. Nevermind the general lack of group content. WoW is better. However, ultimately it still falls flat because of how much of the content is soloable, and the fact that players often just log on solely to do group content and then log off (raidlogging). Finally, often people just speedrun content to get the best gear. The magic, mystery, and wonder has been sucked out of the whole experience. Getting older is partly to blame. However, I definitely think that MMOs (note that they are no longer called MMORPGs) are becoming less social.

I suspect that we will see a resurgence of MMO's, once AI starts doing the endless programming required for them. They do exist currently though and there are quite a few.

There is a really interesting one called Star Citizen. Its universe is fucking MASSIVE! You have spaceships that you can collect. You can buy them, steal them. You can sneak in and stowaway on another players ship, kill him once he leaves orbit, then take the ship for yourself. You can team up with multiple people to attack a larger ship in space, board it and take it over.

I dont do PVP either. It bores the living shit out of me. After about a thousand hours spent on killing my buddies in the Golden Eye game back in the day, im over it. I wont spend 1 second on PVP anymore.
