The historical ties are conclusive ... you're right, the Muslims did get the concept of a zero value from India ... as with algebra at-large, it was the Muslims in Baghdad who refined all this into a codified product ... what we call algebra today ...

Maybe the confusion is with geometry ... that goes back to prehistoric man ... although refined into today's form in Babylon and later Greece ... but the concepts of algebraic functions starts with 8th Century Islam ... the so-called "Golden Age of Allah" ...

That's where the West got their knowledge ... yeesh ... powers that were wanted to cut Galileo's head off as late as the 16th Century ... it was only when his close friend, the Pope, stepped in ... and that got Galileo home confinement for life ...
