Chief of the National Detective Police La Fayette C. Baker's detail ran down Booth and Herold to the ban in Virginia where Booth was killed.

I saw the sword that was presented to him by the GAR the other day.

One wonders how much more smoothly reconstruction would have went with Lincoln around, and if he would have ran for a 3rd term.

/---/ Being born and raised in the South, most everyone agrees Booth did a disservice by killing Lincoln. VP Andrew Johnson ( a democRAT) was no friend of the South.

No of course they didn't. Hyperbole is unsuiting.

When Johnson lost his impeachment, The Radical Republicans were given free hand. While most of what they did was necessary, it was also done in a way to overly antagonize the former confederates, and as we have seen through the rearview mirror of history that the end result was that Reconstruction didn't stick.

Lincoln would have been able to temper what was needed with what would be palatable to the former confederates.

I agree. I am just noting this is not the worst the government could have done. More radical elements wanted to depopulate the South.

That was a small number, the main Radical Republicans had the noble goal of protecting the freedmen, but they lost sight of the long term goal over short term gain.

Again we agree! Frankly they pooped the bed on two things:
1. Not doing the 40 acres and a mule plan, or alternatively aiding freed slave to move and settle in the West.
2. Later allying with wealthy Southern whites to gain their votes in the later 1800s, instead of actually breaking up the plantation class.

Good morning, today we celebrate the end of the tyranny that was the Lincoln Administration.
Yeah, Lincoln sure was a tyrant. Only the most ruthless and brutal of despots would deny to Good White Christian Southeners all the pleasures and profits that derive from tyrannizing Black people.

/——/ And democRATs haven’t forgiven Republicans for freeing the slaves.

I like Lincoln, but by any reasonable measure he was a tyrant. He jailed Southern supporters and newspaper editors who disagreed with his policies. He used force to keep Maryland from seceding and sent federal troops into New York to violently repress the anti-draft rioters.

Would you consider FDR a Tyrant? Not a criticism, but a question.

Yes and no. He rode roughshod over the law and the SCOTUS. He essentially blackmailed SCOTUS into not opposing his social reforms after his own party refused to allow him to pack the court. I think he was one of the worst presidents the USA has ever had, most of our current problems can be directly laid at his feet.

Ok. You are consistent. 👍
