There was a conservative wing in the Democratic Party for about century, give or take.

A left/right coalition existed in the Democratic Party existed during that time period.

That coalition began to fall apart under Harry Truman when Truman began to actively push for civil rights. That push began to alienate the southern conservative Democrats.

By 1964, the southern conservative Democrats were in open opposition to the Liberal wing of the party. The coalition all but disappeared after that. The liberals went their own way to become the current Democratic Party; the conservative Democrats began first to start voting Republican (as in 1964 election) and eventually to become Republican.
