I find actual people to be a bit more challenging. You can learn to work the computer.

Book suggestion - for the player 1400 - under rating I would recommend Power Mates: Checkmating strategies and techniques by Bruce Pandolfini. Later on you might want to also pick up 1,001 Checkmates by Bruce Pandolfini.

I have heard of power mates. I was in a chess club in my local city and they were talking about it.

Buy a roll up board (cloth) with algaebraic notation on it. Get the Staunton style chess pieces as that is what the chess federation players use. Then memorize the board. You can practice by playing chess over the telephone using algebraic notation. It's very good exercise for your memory and to get into the practice of seeing the board without looking at it.

This is Staunton style. Staunton is the international standard used in FIDE tournaments. Buy the black and white.
