I was a big fan. Only saw him once live. Good stuff.I believe he was the GREATEST American rock star of all time. He wrote dozens of great great songs
Been listening to his digital station and his songs are so CREATIVE
I did see him once live in like 1994 or so in Phoenix
I was so sad when he died.
He had a bad hip and made it far worse by touring.
I rarely ever show emotions but I was sad when he died.
Cobain suffered from severe depression which resulted in his suicide. He was a prolific songwriter and contributed to many of Nirvana's hit songs, which are often celebrated for their creativity and emotional depth. Sadly, Kurt Cobain passed away in 1994, which deeply impacted fans and the music industry as a whole. His struggles with health issues and the toll of constant touring contributed to his untimely death.
Petty was no ordinary performer. So the answer is a resounding , No . We do not miss him and what Harrison , Dylan and Orbison were doing with such an ordinary performer is difficult to fathom. How did he blackmail them ?
His voice is irritating. Maybe as bad as Bob Dylan's.Petty was no ordinary performer.
Well the duet he did with Stevie Nicks was pretty good. He had the perfect complimentary voice for hers. He even wrote songs for her., and she actually wanted to be a member of the heart breakers at one time..
Isn't it great how Harrison and Orbison made Petty palatable?

Nah, I actually love Tom Petty. He is one of my favs. . . he is just as good as all those others. . ..

The Wilburys was when I really listened to Tom Petty, his work in that group but also his vast work in his own group.
In the same vein as Dylan/Hendrix/Mark Knopfler... extremely talented musically... extremely... but didn't have the voice to match it.
Most rock singers do not have great voices but there are some exceptions like Elvis Presley, Steve Perry and Freddie Mercury.Petty did not have what we would call a classic singing voice, though i know a lot of singing coaches will tell you that EXPRESSION is just as important as technical singing ability. Where Petty lacked in vocal range he made up for in vocal expression, and the way he wrote his songs his voice worked perfectly. He didnt try to sing outside of his ability and he just had a knack for writing catchy tunes.
I would label his music as road music. The kind of stuff you would listen too when your driving on a long trip... and this makes Petty very relatable to the American experience.. in that we are a car driven society.
The fact that is voice seems somewhat like just the voice of an average guy...actually makes his songs even that more relatable and easy to sing along to... where as is would be much harder to sing along with the complete vocal ranges of singers like Geoff Tate or Axel Rose...
Yes Petty doesnt have that sweet singing voice but he has intangables due to his vocal expression and musical arrangements that make people like him without really knowing why.
He actually was a musical genius for that reason... he took what he had and really over achieved with it.
Oh I don't know... I could probably list 50 with a little timeMost rock singers do not have great voices but there are some exceptions like Elvis Presley, Steve Perry and Freddie Mercury.
Yes there are probably more but most rock singers do not have great voices.Oh I don't know... I could probably list 50 with a little time
Depends on what great is. Great as in Pavarotti? That is an awful high bar.Yes there are probably more but most rock singers do not have great voices.
That he did.Roy Orbison had a great voice.
Depends on what great is. Great as in Pavarotti? That is an awful high bar.
An example - Eddie Vedder. Very good singer. Good range, has the ability to carry a single note without wavering for a good 6-7 seconds. Elvis may not have been able to do that.
His voice is just not what you think of as a traditional, smooth voice.
Awesome stuff... especially after about 3:00
