A ZIP file is a file format that compresses one or more files into a single archive:
- What it is
A ZIP file is a type of archive file that uses lossless data compression to reduce the size of files. This makes it easier to store and transport files, and to share them with others.
- How to identify it
You can identify a ZIP file by its file extension, which is always .zip. The file icon will also change to indicate that it's a ZIP file.
- How to create one
To create a ZIP file, you can:
- Locate the files you want to compress
- Press and hold or right-click on the files
- Select Send to
- Select Compressed (zipped) folder
- How to unzip one
To unzip a ZIP file, you can:
- Locate the zipped folder
- To unzip a single file, drag it from the zipped folder to a new location
- To unzip all the contents, press and hold or right-click on the folder, select Extract All, and follow the instructions
You can create ZIP files on:
- Macs
Use the Finder app, select the files, use a two-fingered touchpad press or right-click, and select Compress
- iPhones and iPads
Select one file to save it with the same name, or select multiple files to save them in an archive named Archive.zip
- Windows PCs
Use File Explorer, select the files, right-click, select Show More Options, hover over Send To, and select Compressed (Zipped) Folder
