Sadly, the fledgling economy that could have formed the basis of a very strong black economy was abandoned when the Civil Rights Act provided 'equal access' to the general (read 'white') economy. Blacks immediately forsook their own businesses to take advantage of what they had been kept from...all things white.

This continues to this day. Blacks return their earnings to white (and other-than-black) businesses as soon as they can cash their paychecks. If only some of that money was used to build "black capital" through savings and investment blacks could quickly raise their living standards and virtually eliminate their poverty as well as other social problems. As it is they are like a kid in a candy store with their money, buying anything that delights their eyes, with no thought for tomorrow.
