Not that many children are getting GAC (less than 5000 even get hormone treatment out of an estimated 300,000 transgender youth), but as a principle, the people who are best suited to determine the best course of medical care are doctors and patients (and their guardians).

Mental health care is still largely in its infancy. It was not very long ago that the height of mental health care was the insertion of a large metal rod into a patient's brain (overseen by a doctor who made the decision in consultation with the patient and his/her family, of course, just like you say they should. And hey, there weren't that many of them.), then hoping the patient didn't die of blood loss, brain damage or infection.

This is why I predict in another hundred years or so, mental health professionals will look back at what is being done to children today in revulsion.

Here's a clue. We still see a high percentage of suicide and suicide attempts by those who transition and discover it not only didn't make them feel any better, but now they're stuck in a body that can't have children or a normal sex life.
