I happen to believe Thomas Sowell is an American genius. His specialty is economics and he is very well known. So Has he persuaded you that Culture is vital to countries escaping poverty?

Of course culture is the key to escaping poverty, although leftists deny it because it would require personal accountability.

How, for example, did all those uneducated, impoverished Jews fleeing antisemitic Europe and Russia 100 years ago take merely one generation to move from abject poverty to the middle class? My parents and their siblings ALL went from living in tenement slums in the 1940s (as teens) to home ownership in the suburbs in the late 1950s. And 10 years after that, to trade-up houses in affluent neighborhoods.

They did it via a culture that emphasized higher education, intact families, hard work, and delayed gratification (and a bit of smarts too).

The Democrats get mad when I tell that story.

I’ll give you a bit more as to how my dad achieved, and under horrible circumstances. First, he had to drop out of school at 16 for 6 months because his own father was sick, and Dad had to help put food on the table. Then, he not only rejoined his 11th grade class and caught up, he graduated at the top and won a free college education.

But wait….it’s even harder than that. This was in the early 40s, and his grandmother, his four cousins, and his aunt and uncle hadn’t been heard from…..for months….(oh, I forgot a detail…..they were in Europe) and his family went to bed every night suspecting that Hitler had got them all. (He did.)

Still, that didn’t stop my Dad from focusing on his studies in order to win a free college education, all from a 4h-floor, cold-water flat. His parents instilled in him that value.

Now compare that to today, with welfare recipients crying that they can’t buy soda with their food stamps.

Thomas Sowell has taught me more about critical thinking than any other source/person ever has. He is a personal hero of mine being neither partisan nor ideologue but brilliant in his approach to evaluating the situation that exists in any context.

For sure he and one of his best friends, Walter E. Williams PhD (RIP), have nailed why people with dark skins have not prospered as much as they could have:

1) Interference from politicians/do gooders who made victims of black people and persuaded them to stop doing what would allow them to lift themselves out of poverty or other disadvantages.

2. Demands that black people speak, dress, think, behave, see themselves as BLACK first and foremost instead of seeing themselves as mainstream American citizens. When they are also required to see themselves as oppressed, victims, eternally disadvantaged, that further aggravates the problems they create for themselves that holds them back as a demographic.

Black people who reject both of those traps almost always fair as well as any other U.S. citizens.
