A soul in Purgatory appears before Padre Pio to ask him to offer a Mass for the release of his soul from Purgatory
But wait, there is no Purgatory! (say the protesters)
Well, the Father of Protestantism Luther threw out the Book of Maccabees from the Old Testament, along w/ 6 other Books retained by the Catholic Church (
not the Vatican, where the RCC no longer abides but the true Catholic Church).
In Maccabees, we are shown how
the Jews prayed for the soldiers who died in one of their wars, "that they may be loosed from their sins."
Then there is a book the Protestants still have,
Matthew. In Mt 1823 we find the parable Jesus told of the man who was forgiven of his debts, only to turn around and refuse to forgive his fellow man (of a smaller debt). Theologians are not sure this is the best scripture psg to indicate Purgatory but it does say UNTIL...
The man was punished for not forgiving after he had been forgiven but possibly only punished (by the torturers [demons] UNTIL he had paid back all the debt that had once been forgiven. Some scholars say that someone like this who utterly refuses to forgive does not make it even to Purgatory... which makes sense.
However, there are other passages that allude to Purgatory. I think it is Corinthians that mentions how one can be saved even if his / her work is not adequate. I'll try to find it.
Here it is:
1Cor3:13-15
RE Purgatory (purification after death - before entering Heaven)
Douay-Rheims Bible
11For other foundation no man can lay, but that which is laid; which is Christ Jesus. 12Now if any man build upon this foundation, gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble: 13Every man's work shall be manifest; for the day of the Lord shall declare it, because it shall be revealed in fire; and the fire shall try every man's work, of what sort it is. 14If any man's work abide, which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. 15If any man's work burn, he shall suffer loss; but he himself shall be saved, yet so as by fire. |
Note: This is not meant to imply that we can do sloppy work for God, presuming on His ultimate forgiveness... We have to stay faithful to Jesus until the end and do the best we can for the kingdom. That doesn't mean we will be perfect, though Mt 5:48 calls us to be perfect as God is perfect. The imperfect will experience a form of fire (Purgatory/purgation) but will be saved "as by fire" so he or she can enter Heaven, where "no unclean thing will enter" (Revelation)
