The idea that Israel is obligated to actively prevent Jewish people from living in parts of the territory under its control is absurd. Eugene Kontorovich explains:

What do they mean when people say the "settlements are illegal"? These words which have never been interpreted or applied to any other country. What they really mean is that Israel is required by some principle of international law to maintain Judea and Samaria as a Jew-free zone. Indefinitely. Until the Palestinians take it off their hands and maintain it as a Jew-free zone themselves. Israel is obligated to ensure that the areas from which Jordan expelled the Jews in 1949 remains de-populated of Jews. Indefinitely. And that is a fairly shocking proposition when put in those terms. The notion that a country is required by law to keep a certain territory under its control free of its own citizens is not something that has ever been asked of any country in the world. It is not something that any country has been asked to do. It is not something that any country has done. And it is not something any country has been faulted for failing to do. Its an unprecedented demand.

+1 ^^^ this. This is what I will never understand here. In 1948/9 the West Bank was occupied by Jordan. They kicked out all the Jews and destroyed the whole Jewish quarter in the Old City of Jerusalem and forbade the Jews from the Western Wall. Then when the Arabs attacked Israel again in 1967 and lost their butts, now they just cry the blues like a bunch of spoiled brats. Reminds me of this last election here in the US and how the losers here have reacted.

We agree that there is only one territorial unit. You are just arguing that the territorial unit is not permitted to be the fulfillment of the right of the Jewish people to self-determination and self-government. You are arguing that the Jewish people do not and CAN not have the right of self-determination and self-government.

Look, you are the one who keeps arguing that people have an inherent, inalienable right to self-determination. You have been a champion of that on this board. And I applaud you for it. But you are a hypocrite (or worse) if you refuse to apply it to all peoples. The bottom line is that, if you believe in your own words, you must accept that the Jewish people also hold that right. There is no way around it.

The way I see it, you only have a few choices:

1. The Jewish people do not exist. (That appears to be most of monte's argument)
2. The Jewish people don't count as a people. (Challenger's argument, and part of monte's)
3. The Jewish people don't have the same inherent rights that other people do.
4. The Jewish people are a minority and minorities do not have the same rights that other people do.
5. The Jewish people and the Arab Palestinian people both have the same rights, including the right to independent, culture-specific self-determination.
