As some of us know, America's global reputation has gone straight down the crapper, and at incredible speed. And this is not just with governments who are our former friends and former allies. It applies to their citizens, too. Americans are no longer welcome in many places.

To deal with that, many Americans who are traveling abroad have turned to "appearing" to be Canadian as they travel.

So it's come to this. But you have to admit, it's a good idea! It's like you're a SPY!

A New Trend by American Travelers Is Sparking Frustration in Canada

From the article:

Some American tourists abroad have begun trying out a controversial tactic: pretending to be Canadian themselves. By adding maple leaf patches to their bags or clothing, they hope to pass as locals, but the trend is leaving many Canadians less than impressed.

The aim is to secure smoother treatment in airports, hostels, and restaurants where anti-American sentiment feels strong. This practice, called “flag jacking,” has recently resurfaced with renewed visibility.

The gig is up as soon as Americans start talking.
Americans have been described as obnoxious by many.

Errr, this has been going on since I was a kid, this was a well known approach by backpackers in Europe going back many decades as they would wear Canadian flags on their bags, this was long before even GWB was president.

The world has always hated America since you believe in individual liberty and economic innovation, in addition you exude over confidence often arrogance in some peoples eyes. I dont have low self esteem in the face of confidence so this never bothered me personally. However, freedom bothers foreign governments who try and control everything.

Democrats have been throwing food at the lazy, sniveling fat kid for so long, that Democrats and foreign countries have become addicted to the handouts. How did you think the fat kid would react when Trump insisted that they do some work.

There used to be a term you'd hear a lot: "Ugly Americans".

Now we're definitely earning it.
"Now we're definitely earning it." You have.

The "ugly Americans" were the commie useful idiots who spat on returning soldiers. I've met quite a few yanks over the years; fly boys in Darwin and one in particular who was a Marine Sargent on duty with some Dutch outfit; top lads if I recall correctly. Met a Cherokee once; staunch conservative. Top shelf!!!

So who are these "uglies" you speak of?

Greg

I have been a teenage girl and raised a teenage girl. Mac gets his feelings hurt three times more often than both of us girls ever did together.

There used to be a term you'd hear a lot: "Ugly Americans".

That term that you think so hip ... comes from a 1958 book of the same name by William J. Lederer and Eugene Burdick.

In 1956, Chairman Mao coined the term "Paper Tiger" to describe the America he felt could be easily destroyed

"Yankee" has been a pejorative term for Americans by the British since 1784, by Lord Horatio Nelson.

Foreigners hate Americans for the same reason that teenagers hate parents ...

a combination of insecurity, inferiority, and immaturity.

Or just observation. One of the two.

Believe what you will.

Having spent most of my adult living and working overseas, I speak from my own personal experience.

Most foreigners simultaneously envy the American economy while seeing it as a threat to their own and resenting they need America's economic power to fuel their own economic growth.

Like a teenager that craves independence, but still relies on Mom and Dad to buy him an iPhone.

Unless you live in a place with weird accents like Minnesota, you probably just look like a tool trying this. Foreigners are pretty quick to pick up on an American accent as soon as you open your mouth. I've had people ask me where in America I am from as soon as I said "Hello". I've never had any problems with people giving me flack because I am American, but there are a lot of places with growing resentment toward tourists generally so I am not sure pretending to be Canadian would help you much.

It’s understandable Americans would conceal they’re Americans – Trump is an embarrassment, Trump is a pariah among the civilized West.

Is it hard finding a prescription when you're that myopic?

As long as the American dollar spigot is wide open, they'll put up with anything.
