I would so love to see Amazon thumb their nose at Seattle and do this !
Warning issued after council votes for corporate wealth tax to help tackle city’s housing crisis
Amazon has threatened to move jobs out of its hometown of Seattle
after the city council introduced a new tax to try to address the homelessness crisis.
The world’s second-biggest company has warned that the “hostile” tax, which will charge firms $275 per worker a year to fund homelessness outreach services and affordable housing, “forces us to question our growth here”.
Amazon, which is Seattle’s biggest private sector employer with more than 40,000 staff in the city, had halted construction work on a 17-storey office tower in protest against the tax.
Pressure from Amazon and other big employers, including Starbucks and Expedia, had forced councillors to reduce the tax from an initial proposal of $500 per worker. The tax will only effect companies making revenue of more than $20m-a-year
Amazon recently got billions of dollars in tax breaks courtesy of the last tax bill. The homeless are saying 'hey brother, can you spare me a dime, and this guy bezos, with newfound taxpayer money running out of his bodily orifices, threatens to take his ball and go play elsewhere. Typical.
Why would they spare a dime? You not working, is not somehow an obligation on my part, to spare you a dime.
Amazon provides thousands on thousands of jobs. Instead of sitting on their butts, asking if you can spare dime, about about they apply and work one of the thousands of jobs Amazon is providing?
And what is this "new found tax money".
I earn a pay check. You TAKE money from my check. It's not "new found". It's MY FREAKIN MONEY.
Similarly, Amazon is who earn billions of dollars by providing a service and product people want. It's not "new found money", it's hard earned money, that you are trying to TAKE from Amazon, and then complaining about it if they don't.
By the way, don't sit there and pretend that somehow the government is worse off.
If Amazon leaves, Seattle will lose millions of dollars in tax revenue from all the employees that will no longer be earning a wage.
I'm guessing they also lose on stuff those employees will no longer have an income to buy, thus harming the economy.
If you think that Amazon pays zero tax on anything, and is somehow a magical drain on the local government, you are beyond crazy, and utterly economically illiterate.
