Ritchie Blackmore, Mark I

When I wanted to procure my first electric guitar many decades ago I was fortunate enough to talk to a very well educated store owner. At that time I had drifted away from Jimmy Page and Led Zeppelin and was mesmerized by DP Made in Japan

The store owner was dismissive of it and said Blackmore sold his musical soul to be popular.

He directed me to the Mark I Deep Purple band and highlighted “Emeretta”, “Why didn’t Rosemary?”, “Hard Road (wring that neck) and “The Bird has Flown”

Was he right?

i was into early DP....Rod Evans was a pretty good vocalist....always thought blackmore was the best rock guitarist of that era....

To his credit, he was able to totally change his approach to soloing when he formed Mark 2. Reminds me somewhat of how Zappa was totally different based on who was in the band.

Jimi said Roy Clark and Terry Kath were better too, he hated the "best guitarist ever" nonsense

Zappa met Hendrix too

Absolutely brilliant Blackmore at his best

August 1969, 2 months before LZ II

Blackmore later completed transformed his approach when he picked up the Stratocaster

Also, Ian Paine is maybe the most underrated drummer

its Ian Paice....and he aint under rated in drumming world....he is always in the top ten for great rock drummers...
