I know that today is often forgotten and overlooked by billions.

But today is a Holy Day (aka holiday) that has been used for centuries to remember the Heroes of the Christian and Jewish faith from centuries and millennia past.

However, the Catholic service surrounding this holiday was so boring and uninspiring that the church created Halloween inadvertently.

All Hallowed Eve was the original name. The day before All Saints Day. Same spirit as Christmas Eve Day.
However, the Church took it upon themselves to hit the rumor mill themselves with tales of goblins and gouls that would get you....and scare you right into the most boring service of the year.
But...rumor mills have a life of their own...independent of what the originator wants. And a new fun holiday was created with costumes, festive lanterns, and treats for children.

And where last night was indeed a lot of fun with a party for 40pp with hot dogs and chili for the family and about 300 children trick or treating...today is the day we remember those who have come before us.

The great cloud of witnesses that have made today possible.

It's more complicated than that, dating back to ancient Celts. Our October 31 fell inline with the last day of the year where they believed the dead could come back to freely mingle with the living.

Centuries later Pope Gregory III chose November 1 as All Saints Day as that was the day he dedicated something in St. Peter's Basilica to all saints. All Hallows Day had an All Hallows Eve.

As far as "boring", All Saints Day is celebrated with Christians gathering for Mass to honor All Saints. Mass celebrates the world's redemption and the way of salvation being open to all. The cynical might say, Christians can be distracted from this by tossing them candy. As for many of us, we will be also be gathering to celebrate and honor all the saints and for worship and praise for Father, Son, Holy Spirit through who makes all this possible.

The world has a rich, varied, and interesting history. Don't wave away the Celts and replace them with Christians. Celts have their own story which is worth remembering as well.

I don't think that it was boring at all. Us Catholic school kids got the day off, while the government school kids were toiling away.

We gubberment kids had the sugar blues from eating too much candy.
