So let's take if from the top. Slavery in this country was a crime against humanity. The South fought a war with the intent of extending that offense as long as humanly possible.

After the civil war, they followed that up with 100 years of treating African-Americans as second class citizens through segregation and Jim Crow.

It was wrong then, it is wrong now. We don't start repairing the damage until we admit our sins.

Let's try again. they wanted their own country so they could continue to own slaves after most sensible people agreed that thing was kind of wrong.

There are good reasons to fight for independence. This wasn't one of them.

The men who did so should not be celebrated today. They should be denounced and condemned.

The problem you have is you're blaming people in 2016 who had nothing to do with slavery. The majority of them have been born since the Civil Rights Act. What also is ironic is that you are blaming people like me whose ancestors fought for the Union and put an end to slavery. However, my people, from Abe Lincoln on down would not advocate removal of Confederate monuments and renaming of anything Confederate. Simply because it is a part of our history. No one today worships the Confederacy and slavery. You will have to agree that slavery was the law of the land in every state, not just the South. When Ft Sumter occurred the Southern officers didn't resign from the military over slavery but because of their belief in States rights. Robert E Lee was divided over his loyalty as a US citizen and his love for Virginia and States Rights thus Virginia had more sway. That's the way it was and that's how I see it.
