They get kicked off the team for drug or alcohol use (DUI, mainly) but this was an instance where a gun was retrieved by a player and used in a murder, in a woman's death. I would say the previous rules are trumped by a murder.

If Alabama had a losing season, this kid would be gone. They are one of the top teams in the nation. We'll just say he wasn't arrested, so let's play ball.
