"Air Force Global Strike Command Halts Use of Sig Sauer M18 Pistol

A July 21, 2025, memo for Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC) makes clear all AFGSC personnel are to pause use of Sig Sauer’s M18 pistol.

The M18 is a Sig Sauer P320 variant.

The memo comes in response to an “incident at F.E. Warren AFB.” Personnel are to be armed with M4 rifles instead of the M18 pistol while the investigation is ongoing.

Inspections of “all Wing-assigned M18 weapons systems” will occur during the first part of the investigation, and those inspections shall be carried out by “Combat arms inspectors.”"

Sig Sauer use to be an excellent firearms manufacturer, but their quality control has been in decline for years. Their flagship P320 pistol has been plagued with reports of pistols discharging while in the holster. Recently the FBI has reported safety issues with the pistol.

"U.S. Air Force’s Global Strike Command (AFGSC) has ordered an indefinite “pause” in the use of M18 pistols following a recent fatal incident at F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Wyoming. This comes just two weeks after the disclosure of an FBI report that added to long-standing concerns about the ability of Sig Sauer P320-series pistols, a family that includes the M18, to fire without their triggers being pulled. Just days after that report became public, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) issued a permanent ban on the use of P320s. TWZ just recently published an in-depth story on the FBI report and the fallout from it, including Sig’s refutation of the results, which you can find here.

“Air Force Global Strike Command has paused use of the M18 Modular Handgun System, effective July 21, 2025, until further notice,” AFGSC spokesperson Charles “Moose” Hoffman has now confirmed to TWZ. “This decision was made following a tragic incident at F.E. Warren AFB, WY, on July 20, 2025, which resulted in the death of a Security Forces Airman.”"

Let's get the bias out of the way.....First off I never have cared for a SIG except maybe the P226.

The .mil should have went with the G19X.

I have a 19X and it's the far superior handgun.....Simple and effective.

The .mil wanted too much (an idiot proof "modular" handgun) and got a half-assed design for their trouble. Everyone schooled in such things knew it would just be a matter of time with the SIG.

I agree. I've used classic Sigs for years, but this new pistol is dangerous.

The detailed story behind the adoption of the Sig M18/M17.

Now the US military are shooting each other. There's no gun that's idiot proof enough to stop that!

I remember when it was all going on and a black mark against the 19X was (I shit you not) "well what about small-handed women?"......Jesus wept. :eusa_wall:

Wow, the Beretta M-9 grip is huge compared to a G19 and the G19 has multiple sized backstraps now.

So I was performing guard duty in 1972 at Fort Benning, along with a handful of other soldiers. We were all in a big building taking shifts sleeping and going out to guard posts. I was just nodding off on a cot when I heard this loud "BANG!" I tell you, I fell out of the cot and on the floor. Evidently some shavetail lieutenant had an accidental discharge with his 1911. Luckily nobody was hurt.

My cavalry squadron's S-3 captain killed his desk, while cleaning his 1911.

Different death:

"A judge in Pennsylvania has ruled that a lawsuit filed by a widow against a major firearms company can go forward in state court. The case involves the death of her husband, who died from a gunshot wound caused by a holstered Sig Sauer pistol. The firearm, a P320 model, allegedly discharged on its own while still inside the holster. The court decision comes after arguments over whether the case belonged in state or federal court. The judge determined the matter should be handled at the local level where it began.

The woman behind the lawsuit, Mariya Gomelskaya, lost her husband, Roman Neshin, in October 2024. He was 41 years old at the time. According to court documents, he was found with a single gunshot wound to the groin and fragments of holster plastic inside his clothing. The shot came from his own Sig Sauer P320, which was holstered at the time. Her legal team argues the gun fired due to faulty parts and the lack of a basic safety feature that might have prevented it from going off unexpectedly.

Sig Sauer tried to move the case to federal court, arguing that they should not be sued alongside a local Pennsylvania gun dealer named Spot4Guns. They claimed this dealer only played a minor role in the transaction and was named just to keep the case in state court. But the judge said weighing that argument would mean stepping into the legal dispute before it’s time. Because of that, she ruled that the case should stay in the Court of Common Pleas in Philadelphia, where it was first filed."

/----/ One would think the military and law enforcement would have experts on staff who can determine the best sidearms. I'm always amazed at the dumb decisions they make in weapons.

This is why I always thought that appendix carry was a dumb idea...
