My father has since became the grand old man (or grand dame) of gender-identity issues. Three years ago, when my daughter decided to attend New York University and major in gender studies, she found a kindred spirit in the old man in the pink underwear. They spent hours on his back porch, drinking lemonade and discussing what it means to be male or female, what it means to be human. Their conversations always ended the same way. The trappings and labels of gender don't matter, they decided. What matters is that they love and respect each other.
