Afghan girls school feared hit by poison gas

Local officials said the girls became ill after smelling gas at their school, Bibi Maryam, in Takhar province's capital, Taluqan. The city is about 155 miles north of the country's capital, Kabul.

The Takhar governor's spokesman, Sulaiman Moradi, blamed "enemies of the government and the country" for the mass illness and said the aim was to stop girls from going to school.

The girls were taken to the provincial hospital and most were released after being treated, though several remained in a critical condition Sunday evening, Dr. Jamil Frotan, the head of the hospital, said.

"We have already sent samples of their blood to the Ministry of Public Health, and it will soon become clear what the reason for their illness was," Frotan said.

The apparent poisoning came three days after more than a dozen students fell ill in another girls high school in Taluqan. No one has claimed responsibility for either incident.

If Sunnis and shiites kill each other, that's not islamophobia. If they team up to kill ahmadis and sufis, that's not islamophobia. But if some guy in a NASCAR shirt thinks negative thoughts about a woman in hijab, then that's intolerable islamophobia and we should be ashamed of ourselves!

The international Afghan Donors Conference in Tokyo today pledged $16 billion in development aid through 2015. Some of that aid is conditional on improved rights for Afghan women. Those rights are literally under attack by the Taliban in many parts of Afghanistan.

They set fire to gay men and put them to death there too. The physical abuse of women and children in Iran is horrific. I feel very sorry for the citizens who are living under such a repressive government. If anyone should have been liberated in the arab spring it should have been persians ( even though they are not arab - this is a Shia Muslim nation - is it not? ) Why would Libyan leader ( Quaddafi ) be overthrown & replaced - for the worse - Mubarrak be replaced by Morsi ( definitely for the worse ) yet Achminijad ( who IS the worst - could it get any worse? ) gets a pass and is allowed to continue on? How does that work?
