Well, I’m a right winger. I believe slavery was and is an atrocity. I don’t believe in tearing down statues. The majority of people (probably all really) honored with statues are not being honored for their racial beliefs, or their roles in slavery, or whatever. They are honored/remembered for other things. People are imperfect, that’s reality. It’s also, in my opinion, to judge people from the past based on the cultural and societal beliefs of the current day. Slavery has been a part of world history since the dawn of time and still is practiced around the world today. A vast majority of historical figures had slaves, participated in slavery, etc of one people or the other. How many figures in the Bible owned slaves/servants? Several. How many Roman emperors had slaves? Should we tear down any statues/paintings/etc of those people? What about prior presidents who disliked jews, or Catholics, or whoever?
What about other personal failings? As mentioned earlier, MLK apparently beat up some hookers. Someone even mentioned him witnessing a rape. If that is true, should any statue of MLK be torn down? Streets renamed? I don’t think so. MLK is not honored for beating up hookers, he is honored for his role in civil rights.

Now if there are statues or memorials like “here lies Mr. Jones. No one ever beat and lynched slaves like this guy. He was number one!” I’d be all for taking that down. However, if people didn’t want it taken down because they felt it was a reminder of wrongs of the past and an example of how far we have come as a society, I would be ok with leaving it up.

I think we do have an issue with violence being glorified.
But I disagree regarding the cops.
If they go in and clean things up with a heavy presence they get accused of targeting those communities, discrimination, etc.
If they take a hand off approach they get accused of neglecting those communities or just trying to contain the problems to those communities.
It’s a no win situation.

Slavery has been a part of world history since the dawn of time and still is practiced around the world today. How many Roman emperors had slaves? Should we tear down any statues/paintings/etc of those people? What about prior presidents who disliked jews, or Catholics, or whoever?

What about other personal failings? As mentioned earlier, MLK apparently beat up some hookers. Someone even mentioned him witnessing a rape. If that is true, should any statue of MLK be torn down? Streets renamed? I don’t think so. MLK is not honored for beating up hookers, he is honored for his role in civil rights.

Do you know that Dr. King did any of those things or is that information that is just put out there to put him in a negative light.

Now if there are statues or memorials like “here lies Mr. Jones. No one ever beat and lynched slaves like this guy. He was number one!” I’d be all for taking that down. I think we do have an issue with violence being glorified.
But I disagree regarding the cops.
If they go in and clean things up with a heavy presence they get accused of targeting those communities, discrimination, etc.
If they take a hand off approach they get accused of neglecting those communities or just trying to contain the problems to those communities.
It’s a no win situation.

No if they go in and UPHOLD the law and treat the citizens of color with the same respect that they treat white citizens then they would be welcomed in the community, but unfortunately history shows the have NEVER done that.

What creates any crime other than motivation? The motivation would have to be evaluated then determined by a trained professional in the field of mental aberrations. If I was to bet the farm on what triggered this random act of violence I would pick the symptom of psychosis(loss of touch with reality) from what I have read about this tragedy.
