That's true, over 200 years it was decent and then Federal government got involved and there has been a steady decline.

I would need a few months to study to pass this monster test

Wow

My grandmother, may she RIP, only completed 8th grade before she had to go to work to help the family - which was common in 1917.

She was better educated than today’s average college graduate.

You can see the result of multiple generations of a public education phenomenon that remains today: If the kids are failing the current test, then there is nothing wrong with the kids, and nothing wrong with the teachers; it's the test that needs revision. After a hundred years of implementation, we see tests and education that are totally watered down so that the schools and teachers won't look bad.

The difference in the result is remarkable.

It reflects what and how they were taught.
Lot of facts, rote learning and memorization.

i assume figuting how many station wagons you need to carry your watermelons has no "real world " applications, ok.

Another thing to remember. Today there's twice as much American history to learn, as in 1912.
And the only difficult question in the math section is because central heating was invented in 1919.
What's a cord.

A cord is 4x4x8, moron. Of wood, duh.
I bet you couldn't build a birdhouse, let alone a doghouse, fence, or chicken coop.
Here's something to remember: A man should be able to drive a 16p nail home in 3 whacks.
WITH a 16 oz hammer.

There is a movement in Academe that promotes teaching kids FACTS; they will sort out "how to think" on their own. Pretending that teaching them how to think is satisfactory when they grow up ignorant of basic, relevant facts? Not such a good plan.

Then there's the Socratic method. Who here was always taught by the Socratic Method and never Critical Theory?
That Critical Theory stuff is bullshit.

I always felt the Socratic Method was done by professors who couldn't be arsed to actually teach.
